Today’s First Reading from the First Book of Kings, as well as the Gospel passage from Mark, both center on the actions of two seemingly poor and helpless widows who show themselves to be faith-filled and generous stewards. In the eyes of the world, particularly in biblical times when there was no life insurance or Social Security, these widows were weak and dependent on others to take care of them. They each found themselves in desperate situations — one in the midst of famine with a child for which to care, and the other clearly impoverished. Yet, each demonstrated strength and generosity that distinguished them from those around them. From where did this strength come? It came from knowing who they are, and Whose they are. These women must have known their security would not come from a good life insurance policy or connections to someone with a hidden storehouse of flour. At the same time, it is also a way to love the Lord with all that I am and have, since He has told us that whatever we do for others we are also doing for Him. No, their security came from knowing they were daughters of the Most High God and from putting their faith in Him. They had no need to panic in the midst of natural disaster or cling desperately to their menial resources. Their faith in God set them free to trust Him when all seemed hopeless. Their faith kept them detached from material possessions. Their faith allowed them to be brave and generous, to think of others despite their own trials. These women saw themselves as stewards, not owners, of the resources God gave them, regardless of how much or how little they had. And acting as stewards made them gracious, generous and mighty indeed. 

La primera lectura de hoy, del primer libro de los Reyes, así como el pasaje del Evangelio de Marcos, se centran en las acciones de dos viudas aparentemente pobres e indefensas que se muestran llenas de fe y generosas administradoras. A los ojos del mundo, particularmente en los tiempos bíblicos cuando no había seguro de vida ni seguridad social, estas viudas eran débiles y dependían de otros para que las cuidaran. Cada una se encontraba en situ aciones desesperadas: una en medio de una hambruna con un niño que cuidar, y la otra claramente empobrecida. Sin embargo, cada una demostró fortaleza y generosidad que las distinguía de quienes las rodeaban. ¿De dónde provenía esta fortaleza? Provenía de saber quiénes eran y de Quién eran. Estas mujeres deben haber sabido que su seguridad no vendría de una buena póliza de seguro de vida o de conexiones con alguien con un almacén escondido de harina. No, su seguridad provenía de saber que eran hijas del Dios Altísimo y de poner su fe en Él. No tenían necesidad de entrar en pánico en medio de un desastre natural o aferrarse desesperadamente a sus recursos serviles. Su fe en Dios las liberó para confiar en Él cuando todo parecía desesperado. Su fe las mantuvo alejadas de las posesiones materiales. Su fe les permitió ser valientes y generosas, pensar en los demás a pesar de sus propias pruebas. Estas mujeres se veían a sí mismas como administradoras, no dueñas, de los recursos que Dios les había dado, sin importar cuánto o cuán poco tuvieran. Y actuar como administradoras las hizo verdaderamente amables, generosas y poderosas.

Instead, we’re asking for donations of homemade crafts and Christmas-themed items. Your contributions will help make the event even more special! Barby and Deacon Faiva dig deeper into each Book of the Bible to add an enriching more comprehensive learning experience. The class continues each week studying Genesis to Revelation. No deep understanding of the bible is necessary. Everyone is welcome.

The Knights of Columbus (K of C) regular monthly meeting will be this coming Nov 11, 2024 at 7:00 PM in St. Timothy Rectory. All are welcome to attend.
