For too many of us, Lent is a season of doom and gloom, a time to feel bad about all the ways we are not “measuring up” in our spiritual lives. But this view could not be further from the truth. Lent is a season of refreshment and love, of awakening and rebirth. The Gospel Reading, the parable of the Prodigal Son, is filled with this theme of awakening and the extravagant, life-changing love that the Father has for each one of us.
We are all familiar with this amazing story — the bratty younger son who has the audacity to ask his dad for his inheritance early, only to squander it sinfully away. It makes us bristle instinctively at his nerve when we read it. But isn’t that exactly what we do when we selfishly turn away from God (in big or small ways) in our own lives? We squander away the inheritance of grace He has given us.
In desperation from the mess he had made of his life, the son finally “comes to his senses” — awakening to the truth that he is a beloved son of a loving and merciful father — and decides to return home. His contrition is faltering and imperfect and seems motivated in large part by his growling stomach. But it is enough for the loving father.
In fact, as soon as the father catches sight of his son he is “filled with compassion for him” and immediately sets about preparing a feast and fine clothes for this son. What an extravagance of love! What a beautiful picture Jesus gives us of our Father’s love and mercy. Oh, how this should fill us with gratitude for such a Father!
And how it should inspire us — with just the tiniest bit of spiritual “spring cleaning” we can be sure we will be swept up in our Father’s loving embrace and find ourselves feasting in His presence. That is what lent is all about.
Para muchos de nosotros, la Cuaresma es una temporada de tristeza y penitencia, un tiempo para sentirnos mal por todas las formas en que no estamos “a la altura” en nuestra vida espiritual. Pero esta visión no podría estar más lejos de la verdad. La Cuaresma es un tiempo de renovación y amor, de despertar y renacimiento.
La lectura del Evangelio, la parábola del hijo pródigo, está llena de este tema del despertar y del amor extravagante y transformador que el Padre tiene por cada uno de nosotros.
Todos conocemos esta increíble historia: el hijo menor, caprichoso y atrevido, que tiene el descaro de pedirle a su padre su herencia por adelantado, solo para derrocharla en una vida de pecado. Instintivamente, nos molesta su actitud al leerla. Pero, ¿acaso no hacemos lo mismo cuando nos alejamos egoístamente de Dios, ya sea en cosas grandes o pequeñas? Desperdiciamos la herencia de gracia que Él nos ha dado.
Desesperado por el desastre en que había convertido su vida, el hijo finalmente "entra en razón" y despierta a la verdad de que es un hijo amado de un padre lleno de amor y misericordia. Decide entonces regresar a casa. Su arrepentimiento es vacilante e imperfecto, y parece estar motivado en gran parte por el hambre que siente. Pero eso es suficiente para el padre amoroso.
De hecho, en cuanto el padre ve a su hijo a lo lejos, “se compadeció de él” y de inmediato se dispone a preparar un banquete y a darle ropa fina. ¡Qué derroche de amor! ¡Qué hermosa imagen nos da Jesús del amor y la misericordia de nuestro Padre! ¡Cuánta gratitud deberíamos sentir por tener un Padre así!
Y qué inspiración nos da saber que, con solo un pequeño esfuerzo de “limpieza espiritual”, podemos estar seguros de que seremos envueltos en el abrazo amoroso de nuestro Padre y nos encontraremos celebrando en su presencia. Eso es lo que realmente significa la Cuaresma.

Are You Interested in Becoming a Catholic? Do You Know Someone Who May Be Interested? In OCIA, we journey with this question and all of your questions about Catholicism and what it means to follow Jesus as a Catholic. We share how God created us to love us and what that means for our lives. How do we respond to this great love? The first phase of OCIA is inquiry and the time to start inquiry is when you are interested or have questions. You can come to the inquiry phase without any commitment on your part. You can simply come to learn, first class begins June 12 at 7 pm.
Easter Egg Hunt
The parish will host a children's Easter egg hunt following each Easter Sunday mass. We are requesting donations of plastic Easter eggs and wrapped candies to fill the eggs. Please drop off your donation at the parish office by Friday, April 11th.

Cluster Bible Study
Join us for a new Bible Study on Acts of the Apostles, starting Thursday, April 3, 2025, at 7 PM at St. Luke Church, Room 4. Meetings are twice a month on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays. St. Vincent de Paul needs volunteers to help deliver food to our underserved community. Just one day a week would help tremendously. Spanish speakers are greatly needed as well. Put your faith into action by calling the parish office or contacting Charlie Gregory or Ana Lucas
