Second Sunday of Easter/Sunday of Divine Mercy
Today, the Second Sunday of Easter, is Divine Mercy Sunday. Our Gospel reading from St. John is often called the story of “Doubting Thomas” but the passage involves so much more than the encounter with the skeptical apostle. It is rich with lessons of Christ’s mercy to all, including an encouraging word from our Lord especially for us, His modern-day disciples.
While Thomas traditionally takes all the bad rap for his doubts, we see that none of the Apostles were at their best when Christ first appeared to them after His resurrection. They were actually in hiding, cowering behind a locked door, paralyzed by fear and doubt.
But Jesus appeared right in their midst in spite of the lock on the door. Was it to rebuke them for their lack of faith? Quite the contrary.
He comes on a mission of mercy. He comes to offer them peace and the restoration of their relationship with Him. And even more, He commissions them to become ministers of His mercy, by giving them authority to forgive sins. At that moment Christ gives to all of us the supreme gift of mercy — the sacrament of Reconciliation. What a precious and powerful gift!
This Sunday is a perfect time to reflect on how well we make use of this gift. Do we really appreciate its healing power? Could we become better stewards of this gift by going to Confession more often? We must also reflect on how well we extend mercy to others as Jesus did to Thomas that day.
Let’s commit ourselves to becoming faithful disciples and stewards of Christ’s mercy. We will be those very ones to whom Jesus gave a “shout out” during His encounter with Thomas: “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed” — in His merciful love.

¡Hoy, en este Segundo Domingo de Pascua, celebramos el Domingo de la Divina Misericordia. Nuestro Evangelio, tomado del Evangelio según San Juan, es comúnmente conocido como la historia del “Tomás incrédulo”, pero el pasaje encierra mucho más que el encuentro con el apóstol escéptico. Está lleno de enseñanzas sobre la misericordia de Cristo para todos, incluyendo un mensaje alentador del Señor especialmente para nosotros, sus discípulos de hoy.
Aunque tradicionalmente se le atribuye a Tomás toda la culpa por sus dudas, vemos que ninguno de los apóstoles estaba en su mejor momento cuando Cristo se les apareció por primera vez después de su resurrección. De hecho, estaban escondidos, encerrados tras una puerta por miedo, paralizados por el temor y la duda.
Pero Jesús se presentó en medio de ellos, a pesar de la puerta cerrada. ¿Fue para reprenderlos por su falta de fe? Todo lo contrario.
Él viene con una misión de misericordia. Viene a ofrecerles paz y a restaurar su relación con Él. Y aún más, los envía como ministros de su misericordia, dándoles la autoridad para perdonar los pecados. En ese momento, Cristo nos entrega a todos el don supremo de la misericordia: el sacramento de la Reconciliación. ¡Qué regalo tan precioso y poderoso!
Este domingo es un momento perfecto para reflexionar sobre cómo aprovechamos este don. ¿Realmente valoramos su poder sanador? ¿Podríamos ser mejores administradores de este regalo acudiendo a la Confesión con más frecuencia? También debemos reflexionar sobre cómo extendemos la misericordia a los demás, como lo hizo Jesús con Tomás aquel día.
Comprometámonos a ser discípulos fieles y buenos administradores de la misericordia de Cristo. Seremos precisamente aquellos a quienes Jesús dedicó unas palabras especiales en su encuentro con Tomás:
“Dichosos los que no han visto y han creído” — en Su amor misericordioso.
